The key element that helps establish balance in floral arrangements is symmetry and proportion. Balance in floral design refers to the visual equilibrium in the arrangement, which can be achieved through symmetrical or asymmetrical designs. Symmetry involves placing elements in a way that mirrors each side, creating a sense of stability and order. Proportion pertains to the relationship between the sizes of various elements within the arrangement; when elements are in proportion, it helps ensure that no single part overwhelms another, contributing to a harmonious design overall.

For context, while color variation adds interest and can impact the emotional response to an arrangement, it doesn't directly establish balance. Textural differences enhance the depth and visual appeal of an arrangement but are not the foundational element for balance. Flower fragrance, although an important aspect of the overall floral experience, is unrelated to the visual balance of the arrangement itself. Thus, symmetry and proportion are integral aspects of achieving a well-balanced floral composition.
